Set in the mid-19th century, during British colonial rule in India, Thangalaan tells the story of a tribal leader named Thangalaan, who belongs to an indigenous community living in the region of Kolar (modern-day Karnataka). Their lives are deeply connected to nature, spirituality, and ancestral traditions.

The British, having learned about the existence of massive gold reserves beneath the land, aim to exploit it. Lord Clement, a ruthless British officer, is sent to the area to secure the land and the gold mines for the British Empire. However, the tribal communities, led by Thangalaan, view the land as sacred, tied to their gods and ancestors.

Initially, Thangalaan is unaware of the British motives. Under pressure and manipulation, he collaborates with the British, believing their intentions to be about development and peace. As the British start digging into the earth, strange occurrences begin to plague the area — supernatural events, the awakening of ancient spirits, and omens signaling disaster.

Through visions and stories passed down from elders and the local sorceress Aarathi, Thangalaan learns the truth: the gold mines are cursed and protected by ancient forces. Disturbing the earth will not only destroy their sacred bond with the land but also unleash a deep, violent wrath upon all who dare to desecrate it.

Realizing his mistake, Thangalaan undergoes a personal transformation. From a man caught between loyalty to his people and the temptation of British promises, he evolves into a fierce protector of his heritage. Rallying his tribe, he wages a brutal rebellion against the British forces, fighting not just with weapons but also with the spiritual strength of his ancestors.

The climax is intense: Thangalaan and his people engage in a desperate battle against the British soldiers at the mining site. Despite their bravery, many tribespeople are slaughtered. In a tragic yet heroic final stand, Thangalaan sacrifices himself to collapse the mining tunnels, burying the gold — and the invading forces — forever beneath the earth.
