Plot Summary:

Emily Jenkins is a dedicated social worker who takes on the case of a seemingly abused 10-year-old girl named Lilith Sullivan. Emily becomes suspicious when she notices that Lilith is withdrawn and frightened of her parents. After a disturbing visit to the family’s home and a strange conversation with Lilith’s parents, Emily begins to suspect that Lilith is in real danger.

Soon after, Emily receives a panicked call from Lilith, and with the help of a police officer, they arrive at the Sullivan home just in time to prevent Lilith’s parents from killing her by trying to burn her in the oven. Her parents are arrested and put in a mental institution, while Lilith is placed into Emily’s care until a permanent home is found.

At first, Lilith seems like a sweet, polite, and innocent girl. But as time goes on, strange and terrifying things start happening around Emily. People close to her begin dying under mysterious and violent circumstances. One of them is Doug, Emily’s friend and a child psychologist, who dies in a gruesome way after speaking to Lilith privately.

Emily begins to suspect that Lilith may not be as innocent as she appears. Digging deeper, she discovers that Lilith is not a normal child, but a supernatural entity or demon that feeds on fear and manipulates people into killing themselves or others. The more fear Lilith senses, the stronger she becomes. Lilith was never abused — her parents were actually trying to destroy her because they knew what she truly was.

Emily becomes increasingly desperate and mentally unstable as she tries to get rid of Lilith. The legal system doesn’t believe her since Lilith continues to act like a perfect child in front of others. Emily’s own mental state is questioned, making her more isolated.

In the climax, Emily tries to kill Lilith by trapping her in a car and driving it off a pier, sinking the vehicle in the water to drown her. In the final scenes, Emily barely escapes from the car, leaving Lilith inside, and it’s implied that Lilith finally dies — though the movie ends ambiguously, leaving room for doubt.
