Ninja: Shadow of a Tear (2013)

Casey Bowman (Scott Adkins) has settled down and is happily married to Namiko (Mika Hijii), his former sensei’s daughter, and they are expecting their first child. Their peaceful life in the Koga ninja dojo in Japan is shattered when Namiko is brutally murdered by a mysterious assailant who leaves a distinctive mark – strangulation by barbed wire.

Devastated and consumed by grief, Casey seeks revenge. Nakabara (Kane Kosugi), a former student of the dojo who now runs his own dojo in Bangkok, invites Casey to Thailand, hoping a change of scenery and training will help him cope. Casey initially declines but later changes his mind after a violent encounter with thugs whose fighting style reminds him of the attack on Namiko. He brutally takes them down, learning they are connected to a drug lord in Myanmar named Goro (Shun Sugata), who is known for using barbed wire as a weapon.

In Bangkok, Casey trains with Nakabara, but his rage and grief continue to consume him. Nakabara reveals that Goro has a long-standing vendetta against their former sensei, Takeda (Namiko’s father), and his own father. He suggests Casey return to America for his own safety, but Casey is determined to seek justice. Instead, he convinces Nakabara to help him find Goro.

Nakabara provides Casey with an old map of Burma (now Myanmar) marked with locations where his father hid ninja weapons during World War II. Casey travels to the dangerous jungles of Myanmar, befriending a local cab driver named Mike who assists him. He infiltrates a local bar, taking down several of Goro’s men. He is later captured and tortured by the local military, who suspect him of being a spy. Casey escapes and extracts information about Goro’s jungle stronghold from a corrupt general.

Guided by Mike, Casey reaches the jungle and discovers the hidden cache of ninja weapons. He arms himself and launches a one-man assault on Goro’s heavily guarded compound. Casey fights his way through numerous henchmen, showcasing his exceptional martial arts skills and brutal efficiency. He confronts Goro’s formidable right-hand man, Myat (Tim Man), in a fierce battle, ultimately killing him.

Casey finally faces Goro. During their intense fight, Goro uses his signature barbed wire weapon against Casey. However, Casey manages to break free and decapitates the drug lord, seemingly avenging his wife’s death.

Triumphant but still grieving, Casey returns to Nakabara’s dojo in Bangkok. There, he discovers the horrifying truth: Nakabara was the one who orchestrated Namiko’s murder and framed Goro. Nakabara reveals himself to be a powerful drug lord who manipulated Casey into eliminating his rival, Goro, to consolidate his own control over the drug trade in Southeast Asia. He offers Casey a place in his organization.

Casey is disgusted and refuses. A brutal and personal fight ensues between the two former allies. The battle leads them into a hidden room filled with ancient artifacts. Despite Nakabara’s skills, Casey’s rage and determination prevail. In a final, desperate move, Casey uses a manriki-gusari (a weighted chain weapon) to strangle Nakabara, mirroring the way his wife was killed.

The film concludes with Casey revealing Nakabara’s treachery to Hiroshi, one of Nakabara’s students. Knowing the scandal would destroy the dojo’s reputation, Hiroshi declares that Nakabara’s actions will be covered up, and bids Casey farewell. Casey, having achieved his revenge and uncovered a deeper betrayal, is left to contemplate his future.
