Bloodshot (2020)

Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel), a U.S. Marine Sergeant, is enjoying a romantic getaway with his wife, Gina (Talulah Riley), in Italy. Their idyllic time is brutally cut short when a group of mercenaries, led by Martin Axe (Toby Kebbell), break into their villa. Axe interrogates Ray, demanding information Ray doesn’t possess. Despite Gina’s pleas, Axe coldly executes her before shooting Ray dead.

Sometime later, Ray awakens in a high-tech laboratory. He’s disoriented and has no memory of his recent past. He’s introduced to Dr. Emil Harting (Guy Pearce), the brilliant and somewhat sinister CEO of Rising Spirit Technologies (RST). Harting explains to Ray that he’s been resurrected through nanotechnology. RST has implanted billions of microscopic nanites into Ray’s bloodstream, which instantly heal any injury, making him virtually indestructible and granting him superhuman strength and agility.

Ray is introduced to other RST “enhanced” individuals: KT (Eiza González), a former Navy diver with a respiratory system enhanced for deep-sea missions, but now suffering from PTSD and relying on medication; Tibbs (Alex Anagnostidis), a blind tech expert with advanced sensory implants; and Jimmy Dalton (Sam Heughan), a heavily scarred former soldier with prosthetic limbs and a cynical attitude. They are all presented as successful examples of RST’s life-saving technology, forming a dysfunctional yet functional team used for dangerous missions sanctioned by RST.

As Ray undergoes training and acclimates to his new abilities, fragmented memories of Gina’s murder begin to surface. Fueled by rage and a thirst for revenge, Ray’s focus intensifies. When a distorted image of Axe appears in his mind, Ray breaks free from RST’s control and relentlessly pursues Axe, using his enhanced strength and healing to overcome any obstacle. He tracks Axe to Prague and engages in a destructive confrontation, ultimately killing him.

However, after his vengeful act, Ray’s memories become clearer, and he starts to notice inconsistencies. KT, who initially seemed distant, begins to show concern for Ray’s well-being and questions Harting’s motives. With the help of a rogue RST programmer, Wilfred Wigans (Lamorne Morris), who was forcibly brought into the organization, Ray discovers a shocking truth: his memories of Gina’s murder are fabricated. Harting has been using advanced holographic technology and neural manipulation to implant false memories in Ray’s mind, turning him into a programmable weapon directed at RST’s enemies. Axe was merely one of these targets.

The implanted memories are triggered by specific visual or auditory cues, making Ray a controllable assassin. Harting, along with his head of security, Sykes (Johannes Haukur Johannesson), has been exploiting Ray’s grief and desire for revenge for their own nefarious purposes.

Realizing he’s been manipulated, Ray teams up with KT and Wigans to expose Harting and dismantle RST’s operation. They face resistance from Dalton and other RST security forces, who are loyal to Harting or simply trying to survive within the organization. A tense standoff ensues within RST headquarters, showcasing Ray’s formidable abilities against the technologically advanced defenses and enhanced personnel of RST.

During the confrontation, KT reveals her own history with Harting and her resentment towards him for the experiments she endured. Wigans uses his tech skills to disrupt RST’s systems and provide Ray with crucial information. The battle culminates in a showdown between Ray and Harting, who attempts to control Ray using more implanted triggers. However, Ray, now aware of Harting’s tactics, fights through the mental manipulation.

The climax sees a destructive fight where Ray utilizes his nanites and combat skills to overcome Harting and Sykes. The RST facility faces significant damage as Ray unleashes his full power. Ultimately, Ray manages to defeat Harting, putting an end to his manipulative schemes.

The film concludes with Ray, KT, and Wigans escaping the destroyed RST facility. Ray, finally free from Harting’s control and the burden of false memories, begins to forge his own path, choosing his own targets and using his extraordinary abilities for his own purposes, hinting at a future where he might become a true force for justice, no longer a puppet on Harting’s strings. The ending leaves the possibility open for further adventures of the nanite-enhanced Ray Garrison.
